State Regent’s Message – November 2021

Dear Daughters,

The end of October and beginning of November arrived with much needed rain- a blessing for our weary firefighters and our dry earth. October flew by with this Regent attending the weeklong Welcome Home Sunshine Tour that Mrs. VanBuren hosted for the National Board of Management participants. The week went by in a flash as we laid wreaths, visited museums, celebrated the 125th anniversary of the DAR library, greeted honor flights, attended leadership training sessions, and enjoyed the fellowship of Executive Board Members, fellow State Regents, VPG’s, and committee chairs that we have not seen in 18 months. Memorable moments included seeing our newly remodeled Constitution Hall (Magnificent!!!), enjoying dinner on the stage under the stars (Magical!!!), and, at long last, being sashed in the hall by Mrs. VanBuren, a moment I will treasure always!! Weeks end came with a flight to Boston and a week sharing historic areas of Massachusetts and the mansions of Newport, Rhode Island, with 45 fun and enthusiastic California Daughters. Unable to visit the students of Hillside School due to COVID restrictions on visitors, DAR liaison, Rich Meyers met us at the historic Wayside Inn, where he was presented with a check for over $9,700 to raise the barn. Thank you to our generous California Daughters!!

District meetings have begun again along with nominations for district nominating committees. Don’t be afraid to step up and be a part of nominating your future district leaders – say yes to taking an active part in your districts. This Regent traveled to Districts VII and VIII as they held their successful first in-person district meetings. It is wonderful to all be together again, even if we must observe local mask mandates.

Make plans, ladies, to attend the CSSDAR Heritage Tea on November 13 at the Northridge Country Club in Fair Oaks. All California Daughters are welcome. Organize a carpool and come north! State Chaplain Christine McMahan has put together a beautiful program with the theme being “1,000 Cranes,” which you won’t want to miss. Registration is open in the CSSDAR webstore. We will look forward to seeing you!

Many chapters will be remembering our veterans on November 11 with Veterans Day activities and Centennial Commemorations of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. On November 20, the CSSDAR will be re-dedicating the marker at the Torrey Pines site in San Diego. Registration information has been sent.

Members who served as delegates during the 130th Continental Congress have received word of an opportunity to travel to NSDAR HQ in Washington, D.C. A special meeting has been called by President General VanBuren on Dec. 8 to consider modifying a motion adopted by the 127th Continental Congress, establishing the DAR Pathway of the Patriots project and two amendments to the National Standing Rules. See the October 22 President General’s blog post to learn more about this meeting and background on why the meeting is needed, and why the vote must be in person. If you are a delegate, you must register by Dec. 1 in order to be able to attend and vote. This Regent will be attending and would love to hear from those who are planning on attending.

Last, but certainly not least, the Committee Leadership Course is now available! If you are interested in serving on a committee at any level, this is the course for you. In order to register, you must have taken the Members Course. Contact New Horizons Chair Mary Katherine Coovert for more information and to sign up!

As we look forward to the coming holidays, take time for YOU, to rest, refresh, and enjoy time with family. We have seen how precious life is – let us each make time to spend with those we love and have missed.

With much DAR love and appreciation for all that you do and all that you are,
Susan
