State Regent’s Message: May 2021

Dear Daughters:

This Regent could not be more thankful to all California Daughters stepping up to volunteer as the Wreaths Across America Mobile Education Exhibit has kicked off its tour of our state! What an honor to have this opportunity to help share the “Remember, Honor and Teach” mission of Wreaths Across America and what a marvelous opportunity to share with our communities and our veterans just who we are and what we do as Today’s DAR!!! Thank you for your time and your passion for Wreaths Across America! It has been shared with me that the staff of the WAA MEE “California Daughters Rock” and this State Regent couldn’t agree more ! Take a look at the CSSDAR Members Facebook page for the wonderful event photos being posted.

Just as spring celebrates the emergence of new growth, so, we too are coming out of this pandemic ready to roll. More and more of our members being vaccinated allows for new opportunities to again be together in service and in celebration. At the end of April, the Lancaster Administration was able to complete its dedication of the educational plaque at the Mission San Diego de Alcala. The Lancaster and Broderick administrations gathered with members from the area to joyfully celebrate this event and be together again in service and in friendship. It was wonderful to hear the “buzz” that is the hallmark of our events, to hug long missed friends, and to hear members exclaim how wonderful it was to be together after this long year of isolation. As counties loosen their restrictions on gathering, this Regent encourages chapters to again be together in person, if only for your last meeting of the year. While we are thankful for the technology that has allowed us to hold our meetings and yes, to share them with those who are out of state or who are unable to attend due to health issues, that same technology allows us to do that and still meet in person.

In that spirit, there are two, in person State Society events for you to attend in June. Plans are being made for an outside, California Congressional Tea to be held June 5th at our Headquarters in Glendora. We will be filming this event for use along with a special program at the Virtual 50th Anniversary of the California Congressional Tea shown during Congress week on Tuesday, June 29th. Pull out your tea attire and hats and come help us celebrate! Watch for the flyer, out this week. Registration will soon be open on the CSSDAR webstore.

This past weekend, State Chaplain Christine McMahan, State Librarian Debbie King and this Regent took a very fun road trip to Sonoma to help finalize the details for our next event. At 10am on June 19th, CSSDAR will hold a wreath laying ceremony at the Mountain Cemetery in Sonoma to remember and honor Captain William Smith, the only known Revolutionary War veteran buried in California. The wreath will be placed at the approximate location of his gravesite where CSSDAR built a monument and placed a marker during Mrs. Lyons term as State Regent in 1965. SAR also marked the site in 1994. Watch for details of this event also coming out very soon.

While Continental Congress is again virtual this year, all have the ability to be seen and photographed in our beautifully renovated Constitution Hall by having a “cut out” of yourselves made and placed in a seat in the hall. Cost of the cut out is $130.00 with proceeds going to help complete the funding for the renovation of Constitution Hall. Instructions are on the NSDAR website. If multiple chapter members want to be together use the links below:

If you like to see your State and Chapter members’ cut outs seated and photographed together, you need simply use a special chapter code. Visit https://dar.10to8.com to set up an appointment with one of our staff members to make this arrangement and obtain the code. Your members may also order their Congress Cut Outs independently for individual seating if they prefer by following easy instructions here: www.DAR.org/DARCongressCutOut. One quick reminder Daughters – please keep political comments/discussions off of DAR Social media sites and out of Zoom/Teams meetings. Our membership is diverse, with many points of view and as a 501c3 we must be non-political. Your cooperation is much appreciated. This State Regent along with the entire Board is looking forward to being with you again !!

With much DAR love and appreciation for all that you do and all that you are,
Susan
