DAR Museum Moment: Washington the Great – Inaugural Ball Dress

Molly Waterbury, daughter of Brigadier General David Waterbury of Stamford, Connecticut, wore this dress to George Washington’s Inaugural Ball held in New York City on May 7, 1789. For generations after that, female descendants have worn the dress and had their photo taken in it. Sleeve ruffles and a net fichu from the 1800s were added later to evoke the 1780s.
