Chapter Chatter: The John Greenleaf Whittier Chapter Honors Outstanding Community Service Award Winner

On April 17, 2019, Tracy Wittman was introduced by Shiryl Boerlin as the John Greenleaf Whittier chapter’s annual outstanding community service winner.  Tracy, a native of Whittier, worked for 17 years at Rockwell and Boeing on the space shuttle program. From 1984 to 2001 she was a senior member of the technical staff specializing in metallurgical and chemical analysis.

She home schooled her daughter from 1st through 12th grades and was a board member of the California Home School Network. She served as a Girl Scout leader, trainer and registrar. Now retired, Tracy is active in the Whittier community as a volunteer. From 2005 to the present she has been a docent at the historic Bailey House and newsletter editor. She organized the Whittier Founder’s Day, in which the chapter is an active participant. Tracy has held board positions at the Whittier Historical Society, while also volunteering at the Museum. She was awarded the City of Whittier Volunteer of the Year award in 2017.

Tracy presented a fascinating program on the history of the Fred C. Nelles Youth Correctional School, which was founded in 1891. Following the program, she was presented with the National DAR Women in History certificate. Mayor Joe Vinatieri thanked Tracy for her service to the City of Whittier and her community.
