The Navy and the War of 1812

Lesley Clifton, Captain Smith and Wanda Prosser

Thanks to the efforts of First Vice Regent Lesley Clifton, the Santa Margarita Chapter was honored to have Capt. Fred Winton Smith, Jr., Commander of Naval Base San Diego, as a speaker at their October meeting. Capt. Smith, looking terrific in his whites, talked about the War of 1812 from the Navy’s perspective. He told of the many battles fought, and won, by this upstart Navy against the power house of Great Britain. Capt. Smith also answered questions about today’s Navy, its capabilities, and its humanitarian services. The day of the meeting was also the 237th birthday of the Navy, which originally started as the Continental Navy with two armed ships, in 1775. A big birthday party was planned for that evening. Regent Wanda Prosser presented Capt. Smith with a certificate and a hug. Go Navy!
