Dear California Daughters,

Celebrations are in the air as we gather on November 5th for the Religious Heritage Tea in Roseville. The theme is “California Missions: The Spirituality of Colonial California,” and Martha Vallejo-McGettigan, recipient of the NSDAR History Medal, will tell the story.  We are blessed to have such a wonderful historian in Martha, who is a member of the Presidio Chapter.

And we’ll soon be singing “Happy Birthday” to the CSSDAR as we celebrate 125 years of service at the Victorian Christmas Tea in Glendora, on December 10th, 125 years to the day of the founding of the California Society in San Francisco, California. A very special program is planned and you won’t want to miss it.  An invitation and reservation information will soon be posted on the California website.

This regent asks you all to remember to celebrate the service of the men and women who have served our country, as we join together around our state in honor of Veterans Day.  On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, was declared between the Allied nations and Germany in the First World War, then known as the “Great War.” Commemorated as Armistice Day beginning the following year, November 11th became a legal federal holiday in the United States in 1938. In the aftermath of World War II and the Korean War, Armistice Day became Veterans Day, a holiday dedicated to American veterans of all wars. Your community may celebrate on a day different from November 11th, this year; the Internet or your local newsletter is a good place to find out the details.

My message to you in October was sent as I was looking forward to the President General’s Schools Tour to visit our DAR Schools throughout Appalachia. It was wonderful!!  Four California Daughters joined Mrs. Dillon as we met the students and teachers, celebrating their successes and dedicating your many contributions. We even celebrated with a tea party for our girls at California’s Pouch Cottage. This regent was delighted to be hugged and to see her picture posted on the cottage’s bulletin board, as the girls scrambled to show me.  You are always welcome to visit the schools, when in the area.  Give them a call and you will be greeted with open arms.

My best wishes to each of you as you celebrate Thanksgiving with your family and friends. We have so much to be grateful in this wonderful United States of America.
