State Regent’s Message: April 2021

This Regent would like to take a moment to honor and remember a beloved Daughter. Nancy Alexander, Honorary State Regent 2004-2006 and Past Vice President General 2007-2010, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, March 29th in her sleep. Nancy was a member of the Anne Loucks Chapter and was active in many other lineage societies. She most recently shared Greetings at our March State Conference. Daughters have shared fond remembrances of Nancy’s friendship and spirit through Facebook and email. She was a mentor to many and will be dearly missed by those whose lives she touched. A memorial service will be held at a later date as Covid restrictions are eased. In the meantime, let us remember her beautiful smile, her laughter, her love of all things genealogy and her generous service. We are blessed to have known her.

We have now heard from our President General, Mrs. Van Buren, that Continental Congress will be in a virtual format again this year. Yes, this is disappointing news, as we dared to hope that we would finally be able to travel to DC and attend in person, but the silver lining is that all Daughters will be able to attend. As we did last year, we will also be able to attend many more events than we could when in person! To get through this, we must look at the positive and take advantage of all that is offered. Watch the National Members website, as well as for announcements from National on scheduled events. Support your Junior membership by taking part in the Firefly 5K Challenge ! Watch too for information on the California Congressional Tea. Chair Kris Wood and this Regent are not letting the opportunity to hold the 50th Anniversary California Congressional Tea pass by – planning has begun for our virtual event!

Chapter Regents, please make sure that you send your Congress credential forms listing your delegates, as there will be electronic voting on the election of seven Vice Presidents General, one Honorary Vice President General and any other pertinent voting matters. Only those members who are identified as voting delegates on the Chapter Credentials Report postmarked no later than April 15th will be eligible to vote electronically. Don’t miss the opportunity to take part in a vital activity of your National Society!

Last weekend, your State Regent was with Massachusetts State Regent Paula Renkas and her board as they held their Virtual State Conference. In addition to reports of chapters, districts, State Officers and committee chairs, Mrs. Renkas shared updates on her State Regent’s project, which is the restoration and digitization of the scrapbooks of Real Grand Daughters. It is indeed a small world as this Daughter found that Mrs. Renkas was my 9th cousin!

This Regent is looking forward to spending time with Daughters across the country this month as she attends the Virtual Conferences of Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Oklahoma and Tennessee. How fun to be able to visit virtually and learn from each other!

She is also especially looking forward to spending real “in person” time with California Daughters at the Lancaster Administration’s dedication of the informational marker at the Mission Basilica San Diego de Alcala. Let’s keep hope moving forward as the vaccine roll out continues that we will all be able to be together soon!

With much DAR love and appreciation for all that you do and all that you are,
Susan
