Chapter Chatter: Mitz-Khan-A-Khan Chapter Honors Veterans

For many years the Mitz-Khan-A-Khan Chapter of the DAR has been involved with honoring veterans in many ways, including supporting the California Veteran’s Home in Saticoy, California, participating in Stand Down events, Memorial Day, Veteran’s Day, and placing wreaths and flags at the graves of Veterans.

Members Cherie Fair-Weather and Pat Steeno (with their husbands) currently are trying to raise funds for Wreaths Across America. According to Cherie and Pat, there are more than 18,000 Veterans that are laid to rest at this cemetery. The MKAK Chapter is anticipating up to 500 wreaths being placed on the Veterans’ graves this coming December. The Ivy Lawn Cemetery has Veterans from the Spanish American War, the Civil War, WWI, WWII, Korea and the recent conflicts as well.

These two members, with their spouses, are walking Ivy Lawn Cemetery to locate as many of these Veterans’ graves as possible so that eventually each will receive a wreath to honor their service to our county. At the wreath laying in December, they hope to have some Boy Scout troops, Girl Scouts, High School kids, etc. place a flag on each grave of a veteran and then place a wreath on that grave.

Members walk the various sections for two hours a day about three or four days week and are in the process of making a spread sheet of the names of the Veterans. It will take months for them to finish the lists.
