Chapter Chatter: Luiseño Chapter Honors One Hundred-Year-Old Chapel

On October 24, 2021, the Luiseño Chapter honored the Chapel of Memories in Temecula with an historical marking plaque. The chapel is the original St. Catherine of Alexandria Catholic Church that was built in 1917. This one hundred plus year old building was the first church structure built in Temecula and served the Catholic community for over seventy years.

The marking of this beautiful chapel is the fifth historic site marking for the chapter. The other sites were in Lake Elsinore.

The attendees to the ceremony included DAR and civic dignitaries. Included in the ceremony was a presentation of the history of both the church and the fund raiser that paid off the building loan for the church. In addition, a presentation by a Temecula Valley Historical Society Notable Woman, Edna Swenguen, portrayed by Michele Elling, told of life in Temecula in the early 1900’s.

The elegant plaque is displayed in the chapel’s vestibule to be noticed by visitors as they enter the chapel. Currently the chapel is under the management of the Temecula Valley Historical Museum and is used for weddings and other events.
