Chapter Chatter: John Greenleaf Whittier Chapter Visits Camp Pendleton

On Wednesday, September 12, 2018, twenty chapter members visited the Marine Corps base at Camp Pendleton in San Diego County. The trip was memorable for all, especially our 35-year member, Lavalette “Penny” S. Brown, a Past Chapter Regent, who is the great grand-daughter of Major General Joseph H. Pendleton, USMC.

During his military career the General recognized the value of this area as an ideal location for a Marine Corps training base. This choice pioneered the activities that contributed to California’s evolving military heritage

The highlights of our tour included the Blinder Chapel, the Mechanized Museum and the statue of America’s war horse, S/Sgt. Reckless.

Penny Brown, along with Regent Barbara Pickard, met with Brigadier General Kevin J. Killea, Commanding General, Marine Corps Installations West, and reminisced about the Pendleton family history.

The tour concluded with a wonderful lunch at the historic Green Dragon Tavern and Museum in Carlsbad.
