The General John A. Sutter Chapter, Sacramento, California, will be celebrating its 80th anniversary this June, 2019. The chapter was founded in 1939.

In October 1938, a planning meeting to organize a second Sacramento area chapter was held in the home of Miss Henrietta Horton. Two names were considered for the chapter – Dolly Madison and Priscilla Alden. On May 24, 1939 the chapter was organized with the name of General John A. Sutter and its location was given as Del Paso Heights, California.

The organizational meeting of the John A. Sutter Chapter was held in the parlor of the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Sacramento. There were twelve charter members present.

The General John A. Sutter Chapter has grown to 101 members. The chapter currently has seven applications pending approval at National, and is working with 29 prospective members.

The chapter is involved in numerous activities and programs including support of active duty military personnel, veterans, DAR Schools, conservation programs, and literacy and historical programs.  Additionally, the chapter supports the JROTC program at three area high schools.

This year the General John A. Sutter Chapter nominated Sacramentan, Robert Burns, for consideration by the California State Society for the Outstanding Veteran Volunteer Service Award. He was selected as the State winner and was presented his award at the 111th Annual California State Conference in March.
