State Regent’s Message: January 2019

My Dear California Daughters,

Time flies when you are having fun…when you are doing the work that satisfies and makes a difference!

Thinking of your “work” implies “hours.” Received information, along with the lyrics below, that you have until January 31, 2019 to record your 2018 service hours. (Be sure to record them using the correct year!) Please, oh, please, take the time to use this means to highlight your service to God, Home, and Country.

‘Twas the night after Christmas, and there in the house, the laptop was waiting, start moving that mouse! Your hours are important; don’t think they’re too few. Don’t dilly or dally, we need them from you! I know you’re very busy, and could use a rest. Just remember when you’re finished, that you gave DAR your best!

Now, having recorded the past, we will look to what’s coming soon…

February 9th ~ 90th Birthday Celebration for the Madonna of the Trail – wreath-laying at monument in Upland and reception to follow at our Headquarters in Glendora. Reservation flyer with details is on the website. Webstore reservations will be up the first week of January.
March 14th – 17th ~ State Conference – Note “Movie Night” for those coming in on Wednesday (seating is limited!); hear guest speaker, Andrew Carroll, Opening Night; two Thursday tour opportunities; vote on the revised Bylaws; enjoy 1st-time dance following the Celebration Dinner; and learn as you enjoy the totally new way chapter regents/district directors will give their annual reports. Watch for the Call to Conference coming in early January!

The count now stands at 21 for the number of California Daughters who lost their homes or sustained severe damage in the Camp and Wolsey Fires – 18 in Northern California; three in Malibu. The number is high, but when one watched the burning, the property destroyed, even the lives lost, it is a miracle that we did not sustain even greater losses. I say “we” because what happens to one Daughter, affects us all. Donations, gift cards (Target and Wal-Mart preferred) and coupons from Bed, Bath, and Beyond will be collected through February 1, 2019. If you intended to participate in this “show of love and support,” there is still time to do so. Watch for the Announcement that provides needed information.

Often, we see something rather profound that must be shared. Consider, as you approach the coming year, the following that comes from the little community newspaper in Tierrasanta, where I live:

This year, mend a quarrel. Seek out a forgotten friend. Dismiss suspicion, and replace it with trust. Write a love letter. Share some treasure. Give a soft answer. Encourage youth. Manifest your loyalty in word and deed. Keep a promise. Find the time. Forgo a grudge. Forgive an enemy. Listen. Apologize if you were wrong. Try to understand. Flout envy. Examine your demands on others. Think first of someone else. Appreciate. Be kind; be gentle. Laugh a little. Laugh a little more. Deserve confidence. Express your gratitude. Welcome a stranger. Gladden the heart of a child. Take pleasure in the beauty and wonder of the earth. Speak your love. Speak it again. Speak it still once again.

Remember, in all things, you are Making a Difference through Your Service to God, Home, and Country.

With much love and appreciation,
Adele Lancaster
