State Regent’s Message – May 2017

Dear California Daughters,

What a busy time since we all returned home from State Conference. On April 21, State Treasurer Susan Broderick, HODAR Bob Moncrieff, and this regent, jumped in the car and headed north to Crescent City where Del Norte Chapter dedicated a memorial marker and flagpole for Rocky Peterson, a young man who served our country and was killed in 1941 when the USS Arizona was bombed in Pearl Harbor.  The chapter and community raised money for the memorial, which was matched by our National Society. Rocky was a wonderful athlete, raised in Crescent City and drafted to play professional baseball, so it was particularly fitting that the local baseball park was named for him and the marker and flagpole placed at the entrance. It was a memorable day with many community members out to pay tribute. It was especially moving to see the young people in attendance who had not known about this chapter in our nation’s history and the courage of these young sailors. A special treat for this regent came when the chief of police offered your regent a ride to the celebration luncheon in his police car with lights blazing and siren sounding…that was certainly a unique experience…

CONGRATULATIONS, Del Norte!!

Then off to Iowa the following week for the Iowa DAR State Conference in Ames! You will remember Iowa’s State Regent Cindi Carter, my hostess, and Wyoming’s State Regent Donna Weaver who were there to greet me.  Both were still talking about the wonderful time they had at California’s recent State Conference and send their love to all of you! Virginia Trader, Historian General, joined us for the fun!  Iowa daughters are incredibly warm and welcoming and their countryside vibrant with flowering trees!  (The University there has a Butterfly House and the state a Statewide Monarch Conservation Strategy…our kind of place!!)

I hope to see many of you at Continental Congress and our California Tea where we will honor Treasurer General Carol Jackson.  Go to the CSSDAR Members’ Website for details!

Love to all of you,

Bev Moncrieff
State Regent
