Chapter Chatter: Golden Nugget turns 100 “Legs” into Literacy in Support of Education

Golden Nugget 3Golden Nugget Chapter, recently donated 100 Literacy Bags to the “Paradise Ridge Family Resource Center” and “Youth For Change”. Golden Nugget Chapter’s goal was to reach children 4-6 years of age in the center’s  “Strengthening Families Project”. The project includes homeless, foster children, children in abused women’s shelters, and low-income families who benefit from all the services the center provides.

The Literacy Bags are handmade from old blue jeans. The legs are cut off and then each leg is cut into three pieces. The pieces are made into ditty bags and decorated with iron-on appliqués in juvenile patterns. Each bag contains pencils, crayons, foam alphabet letters, a writing tablet, a bookmark designed by one of the chapter’s members, with library addresses and phone numbers on the back, and a rubber bracelet that says “I LOVE TO READ” printed on it. A book is included with each bag.  Both the bag and book are packaged in a large plastic ziplock.

Along with the Literacy Bags the chapter gave the center another 100 books that were donated by the local library for the center to give out to children free of charge. Golden Nugget’s goal was to get kids excited about reading and help open the wonderful world of books to them.  In addition to the Literacy Bags, they gave bookmarks noting Family Literacy Day and Family Literacy Month to the Paradise and Chico Libraries.
