Announcement: DAR Museum National Treasure – August 2020

Teachers and principals gave awards of merit to students to encourage and reward their scholastic efforts. This certificate is dated February 11,1847 awarded to Sarah Elizabeth Moughton for her “diligence and attention to her studies:” Sarah was a student at the Lydia English Female seminary located in Georgetown which was founded in 1826. Awards like these were very important to the 18th -19th century children and their parents.

Eighteen-year-old Sarah, cherished this memento of her education. Her great -granddaughter donated these items to the DAR museum noting that Sarah had made the streamer while a student at the seminary.
