Chapter Chatter: John Greenleaf Whittier Chapter Hosts District XIII Awards Luncheon and Displays Historical Doll Collection

On February 16, 2019, the John Greenleaf Whittier Chapter (JGW) hosted the District XIII DAR awards luncheon at the California Country Club in Whittier.  Members, family and friends celebrated the District winners of the Christopher Columbus and the American History essay contests, and the DAR Good Citizen award.

The 5th grade winner, Luke Shaw of El Portal Elementary School, and the 6th grade winner, Diana Montiel of the Carden School, represented the JGW Chapter.  Parents and friends of the students shared in the celebration.

A highlight of the event was a display of historically accurate period dress dolls created by JGW member Arlene Wright.  Arlene’s hobby of making intricate costumes for her “girls” began when her children left the “nest.”  Each doll represents a time in history and is identified as such.

Among the many fabrics she used was a handkerchief with a horse design her brother had as a child.  It is now part of Annie Oakley’s dress.  Each doll has a name and is identified to its place in history.  The doll in red is DAR President General Ann Dillon.

All in attendance were charmed by the display as it added to the enjoyment of a special occasion.
