Announcement: An Opportunity to Make a Difference to Deployed Service Women!

Please join us at State Conference for the second annual Patriotism Luncheon on Friday, March 15, 2019.  The luncheon is open to all. This year the focus is on the active duty women who serve in the military.  Women make up a significant 16% of our active duty military force, yet most of the care packages sent overseas are geared toward men.

As a  woman, wouldn’t it be great to receive a care package that was specifically designed for you? One that included a personal note of thanks or encouragement?

Ten years ago, Cindy Chan-Ley developed Operation Courage is Beautiful (OCIB), a 501(c)3 tax-exempt, non-profit organization.  OCIB specifically provides personal health care products and notes of thanks and encouragement to our deployed servicewomen.

How can I make a difference… what items are needed, you ask? To begin, bring handwritten notes of thanks. If you have extra blank cards, please bring them and they will be used to write additional notes to the servicewomen.  Do include your name and email address, if you would like. Some women will take time to reply.

Products needed are regular size – not travel or hotel samples – and include:
1. Shampoo and conditioning (Suave, Pantene, Finesse, Aveeno, Garnier)
2. Beauty products including moisturizer, eye shadow, eyeliner pencils, mascara,
and lipstick (CoverGirl, NYX Professional, Maybelline, Olay, Wet n Wild Silk Finish)
3. Deodorants (Secret, Ban)
4. Feminine hygiene products (Kotex, o.b., Always)
5. Pocket tissue packets, cotton balls and Q-Tips
Other specialty items might include:
1. Manicure / pedicure sets in easy travel kits, disposable razors
2. Starbucks and other beverage instant packets
3. Net body sponges
4. Bobby pins and hair elastics
5. Knee-high nylons to go over boots to keep out bugs and spiders.

Do not include anything with an alcohol ingredient. Items can be found at Target – Wal-Mart – Dollar Store – Dollar Tree – Bed, Bath, and Beyond, and most grocery and drug stores. Bring the new, unopened, regular-sized items and handwritten notes to the luncheon and help create a care package that will be sent to our active duty servicewomen.

If you would prefer to make a monetary donation to OCIB to help cover the shipping costs, make the check out to: Operation Courage is Beautiful or OCIB. Please write DAR on the memo line. Checks will be collected at the luncheon or can be mailed to:

OCIB
9921 Carmel Mountain Rd
San Diego, CA 92129.

There will also be several baskets available to receive your donations at DAR Project Patriot and DAR Service to Veterans tables in the exhibit room.

What a difference these items will make to our servicewomen! Hope to see you there!
