Chapter Chatter: John Greenleaf Whittier Chapter Celebrates Margaret Ketteman Schwab Smith’s 100th Birthday

On December 19, 2018, the John Greenleaf Chapter celebrated the upcoming 100th birthday (01/02/2019) of Past Regent Margaret Ketteman Schwab Smith (2001-2002).  She has been a DAR member for the past 25 years.  Her “Rosie the Riveter” story has been included in the special CSSDAR booklet published in 2006 by our Past State Regent, Nancy Alexander’s administration (2004-2006) called “Rosie’s Daughters”.

Margaret grew up on a farm in Pleasant Hill, Missouri.  Her mother passed when she was in third grade and she and her younger sister went to live with their grandparents in Belton,Missouri.  However, they spent weekends with her father.  She graduated from high school in 1937, and later joined her brother’s family in Kansas City.  She went to work for the Sunflower Ordnance Works in Kansas City, serving on the detonator assembly line during WWII.

Over the years Margaret has shared her experiences with chapter members.  She is, to this day, a supportive and patriotic Daughter of the John Greenleaf Chapter.
