Chapter Chatter: Redwood Forest Chapter Holds Flag Retirement Ceremony

On August 5, 2017, Redwood Forest Chapter of DAR held a flag retirement ceremony.  It began with an explanation of the ceremony as well as some of the history and traditions surrounding our Flag.

During the first step of the ceremony, the stripes were separated and placed on the fire while reading the name of each of the original thirteen states and the date of their admission into the Union.

As the red stripes, white stripes and blue fields were separated and placed by color on the fire, the speaker described the meaning of each of the colors.

The final step was to fold one flag into triangles with the speaker explaining the symbolism of each fold.  The remaining folded flags were laid on the fire.

Our ceremony was concluded with the playing of “Taps” by Gary Ross.
