Chapter Chatter: Point Vicente Chapter Presents NSDAR Special Project Grant for USS Iowa

The Point Vicente Chapter is proud to announce the granting of $10,000 to the Pacific Battleship Center/Battleship USS Iowa for partial restoration of their teak decks. A presentation was made to Ross O’Brien, Treasurer and CFO of the Pacific Battleship Center at the chapter’s annual year-end luncheon held at The Admiral Risty restaurant on Saturday, June 3, 2017. Regent Alta Graham and Special Project Grants Chair Karin Amour presented O’Brien with an oversized check to signify the granting of funds.

“We are thrilled to be a community partner of the USS Iowa. As members of the DAR, we strive to fulfill our goals of historic preservation, patriotism and education. The Pacific Battleship Center is a great example of all three areas,” stated Graham. “The chapter is thrilled to be the sponsor of the Battleship USS Iowa’s grant.”

More than 77 members, guests and HODARs were present for the ceremony including six new inductees to the chapter. In addition to the grant and induction ceremony, a missing man table ceremony was held and the awarding of the chapters’ new, annual, grave marker sponsorship. A marker will be placed on June 18, 2017 in Alderson, West Virginia for John Alderson, Jr., patriot of member Pattie Mendez. Paula Hawkins, recipient of the sponsorship will begin work immediately to obtain approvals and set up a ceremony for next year’s marker installation.
