3/13/15 State Conference Afternoon Update:

Friday morning started off with meetings of old friends and makings of new ones.  President General Lynn Forney Young greeted Heritage Club Daughters during a tasty morning breakfast and thanked Daughters for all their support. She particularly noted that just through the new Sustaining Donor Campaign, Daughters are contributing over $900,000 annually! The Heritage Club luncheon was also great time for Daughters across the state to visit and get to know each other better.

Mrs. Young also presented this and more information at the morning’s Business Session. Highlights of her talk featured the holdings in the DAR Americana Collection of all of the signatures of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, the current DAR Museum exhibition Eye on Elegance: Early Quilts of Maryland and Virginia, an upcoming announcement about the National Society’s collaboration with Ancestry K-12, and the repairs that will need to be made to the plaster medallions and other areas in Constitution Hall.  Mrs. Young encouraged all chapters to Celebrate America! by creating a special service project to be executed on October 11, 2015 as Daughters across the nation and overseas will join together in a day service. More information about this will be posted on the President General’s Blog.

Following Mrs. Young’s presentation, reports of the state officers commenced.  A particularly special moment in the morning’s proceedings was when State Chaplain Dallas Love recognized five daughters for being 50-year members.

The National Defense Luncheon featured Kerri Childress, Vice President for Communications, Fisher House Foundation. The Fisher House Foundation is best known for providing a network of homes where military and veterans’ families can stay at no cost while a loved one is receiving treatment. There are 64 Fisher Houses located on 23 military installations and 24 VA medical centers. Many more houses are under construction or in design. Chapters can support the needs of individual home locations or can support the program overall by donating unused and expiring airline miles via their Hero Miles program. Ms. Childress’s speech and efforts moved all and were greatly appreciated.
