Mother of Essay Winner Thanks California DAR

Barbara Volker, State Chair American History Essay Contest, shared the National Winner’s page from the March/April Daughters newsletter with the mothers of Sophia Cho and Jack Palaski.  Cecelia Cho, mother of National 5th Grade Winner, Sophia Cho, sent the following letter:

Dear Barbara,

Thank you so much for sharing the California page with us! Thinking back to the excitement of last year’s win, the whole journey seems like a dream. And to think that Jack Palaski could go all the way again! Such a talented young man. Liam Weetman, our school’s fifth grade winner this year, also comes from a fine family and has a real good chance of winning on the national level as well.

I was so proud when I heard Sophia read her essay this year at our school’s DAR tea. She really enjoyed this year’s theme and wrote an inventive story about a young black slave girl’s experience during the American Revolution.

As a mother, I wanted to thank you and all the dedicated DAR members who work so diligently to educate our young people. Through our experience last year, Sophia was introduced to “Liberty Kids” by a member of the Beverly Hills chapter. She recommended this animated series to Sophia and it really brought American history to life. Our first trip to D.C. and especially the guided tour of the DAR Museum’s Period Rooms was like stepping into a time machine. Our docent pointed out such details to Sophia as half-eaten food left when the Sons of Liberty had to quickly evacuate. And along the way so many kind members congratulated Sophia and Jack. Barbara, you especially have been so thoughtful and we will always be grateful that you went out of your way to celebrate awards night with us at the 122nd Continental Congress.

Though she may not realize it yet, my daughter has been profoundly affected by the DAR essay contest. We’re lucky to be at a school that continues to participate in the annual contest and places a great deal of emphasis on history and the arts.

Sophia recently mentioned in passing that historical fiction has become one of her favorite genres. I know that her experiences have sparked this newfound interest.

For your genuine passion and educator’s mindset, we are ever so grateful, Barbara. Thank you for being our guide on this exciting journey.

Sincerely,

Cecilia, Sophia & Joseph Cho
