DISTRICT REALIGNMENT

For many months, the State Society’s Revitalization Commission has been working on a project to review the strength of our districts and chapters and to change the makeup of some of our districts. This analysis included research designed to look toward balancing our districts, strengthening them, and revitalizing them and the chapters within the districts.

The Purpose of Districts. In 1972 when the California State Conference voted to divide the State Society into geographical districts, the purpose of the districts was defined as the strengthening of chapter interest and the promotion of a fuller understanding of the State and National objectives. That purpose hasn’t changed. The discussion of directives from the State and National Societies and the formulating of plans whereby the chapters may carry out these instructions help to accomplish these objectives. Additionally, district-level workshops are helpful in training genies/registrars, VIS, etc., where relevant chapter officers and chairmen are better able to attend.

The goal of National and State Chapter Development and Revitalization Commissions (CDRCs) is to coordinate available DAR resources to support chapters in gaining new members, and developing and educating current members so they will be more active and involved.

The first step in this project was the formation of District XV, made up of six chapters from five different districts, during the term of Honorary State Regent Karon Jarrard.

We are now announcing the second stage.
The State Society is making the following changes to facilitate these goals:

* El Redondo Chapter will move from District IX into District XIII
* Samuel Ramsey Chapter will move from District XII into District XIII
* John Greenleaf Whittier Chapter will move from District X into District XIII
* Rancho Simi Chapter will move from District VIII into District VII

The moves will officially occur at the end of the district term on April 26, after the district directors are installed at the Southern Council meeting at Knott’s Resort. However, for these actions to be successful, it is important that the new chapters in the districts become a part of the leadership teams for their new districts. Therefore the State Regent has issued a dispensation to the District Standing Rules (which require a member to have been a member of the district for 2 years prior to being elected to the district board). They will be “grandfathered” in, if they have been a member of their prior district for 2 years. Districts are strongly encouraged to include the new chapters in their nominations and elections for the next term.

Districts VII and XIII are very excited to gain these new chapters and we thank the chapters for making the move. New ideas, enthusiasm, and energy will enable a very positive outcome to this action.
