Forgotten Women in History

Rae & Wanda

Rae Castro, a member of the Santa Margarita Chapter, reminded us of the part that women have played during a presentation for Women’s History Month. Among the lesser known are three who have made life simpler – Mary Anderson, invented the first windshield wiper; Josephine Cochran, created the first working automatic dishwasher; Marion Donovan, invented the disposable diaper, and one who proved that women are not the weaker sex. Virne “Jackie” Mitchell was one of the first women professional baseball players. While playing in an exhibition game against the Yankees she struck out Babe Ruth and Lou Gherig. Afterward, Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis banned women from the sport. Talk about “take my ball and go home” sportsmanship!
