VIS Update – November 2012

MEMBERS WEBSITE LOG IN

The new CA Members’ Website, at members.californiadar.org, is up and running so make sure to check there for the very latest State and committee information.

Everyone’s login is simple:

Username = 6-digit National number
Password = first initial/last name, like this: lfox

MEMBERS WEBSITE LOG OUT

When you’re finished using the website, make sure to click on the LOG OUT button, right below your name on the left side, to end your session. Do not just close the window or close your browser because the database running the website doesn’t like that. It thinks you’re still logged on. If you do forget to quit your session, then come back to site later and are greeted with “Welcome, Lisa Fox,” it means you did not log out. At that point you’ll need to clear your cache (cookies too!), quit your browser, restart your browser and log back in. And if you’re an IE8 or IE9 user, you really should thing about switching to Chrome or Firefox.

SPAM EMAIL AND VIRUSES

When you receive an email from someone you do not know, and it contains a link or an attachment, do NOT click on the link or open the attachment! This is the method of choice for hackers to disseminate viruses. By clicking on the link or opening the attachment, you launch the program that will install the virus on your computer. Sometimes these emails look very legit, and they may even be touting DAR information, but unless they come from a recognized source, just hit delete.

HELP, I’M STRANDED IN A FOREIGN COUNTRY

And I’ve suddenly lost my spelling capabilities. Yes, those poorly spelled email pleas for money transfers from your friends stranded in foreign countries are completely fake. Your friend’s email was hacked in order to send out the spam so don’t fall for it! It is indeed their email address but the sender is someone who used your friend’s email account to send that message. If you reply, or worse yet follow the instructions and send money, you’ll be sending it to a complete rip-off artist. Your friend is fine. If she’s really stranded, she’ll call from the embassy, consulate, or American Express office in the country where she’s been vacationing.

BROWSERS

We’ve heard from many of you with issues in viewing or using the CA members’ website. If that’s your case, you may want to think about changing to a browser that works better with the technology on the new website. Chrome and Firefox, both free downloads, are easy to install and will give you a much better (and less buggy) surfing experience.

Please let me know if questions on any of the above-
