State Regent’s Message – October 2012

Dear Daughters,

The fragrance and beauty of fall will soon be upon us as we head into October – this State Regent’s favorite month!  October is also an important month for women.  It is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM). Created in 1985 and organized by major breast cancer charities, this month is set aside to increase knowledge and to raise funds for research into the causes, prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and cure for breast cancer.  Many of us have friends or family members who are survivors or who are currently battling this disease. We salute our sisters for their courage, strength, and perseverance as they fight the good fight. The NSDAR Women’s Issues Committee encourages chapters to research and share health topics to help women stay healthy.  Please visit the Women’s Issues National Committee page for links to women’s health information that can be shared with chapter members.

By now, I hope you have received information about the American Heritage Tea to be held Saturday, October 20, 2012, at the Radisson Hotel & Conference Center, Fresno, California.  This new event will feature a one hour program titled, “Words of Wisdom, Words of Women, as taken from true diaries of women crossing the plains.” We will learn about the hardships and adventures of families who came across the continent in covered wagons. The tea runs from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m., and the cost is $20 per person. An additional treat is an archeological display presented by Lisa DeHart, Heritage Resource Manager for the Stanislaus National Forest Summit Ranger District and member of Turlock Chapter. She will be showing artifacts from the Clark – Skidmore Wagon Train of 1852. As Tea Chairman Arlene Richards says, “Gather your chapter members, take a ride to Fresno, and come enjoy an interesting program, delicious dessert, and catch up with DAR friends!”  The reservation form can be found at http://www.californiadar.org/membersonly/forms_docs/ST-AmericanHeritageTea.pdf. The reservation deadline is October 15th, and don’t forget you can make your reservation at the CSSDAR WebStore.

Thank you to members who attended the fall council meetings, and sincere gratitude to the exhibitors, workshop presenters, council managers and their committees for making the meeting interesting and enjoyable.  It was wonderful to visit with everyone, to celebrate California DAR “Homecoming,” and to start a new DAR year!

Bee Inspired and Take Flight!
