American Indians Committee

Please take time during your chapter meeting to promote American Indians Committee activities.  Your members can collect Campbell’s Soup labels and Labels for Education for either Chemawa Indian School, Bacone College, or both. Designate the voices revenue at a meeting for the American Indian Scholarship Fund or the California Indian Scholarship Fund.

Read an Indian Minute at each meeting. Your chapter chairman can find helpful information on the NSDAR committee website.  Legends with a moral are effective, such as ones found in the book, “And It Is Still That Way,” by Byrd Baylor. Obtain a proclamation in November from your local mayor or board of supervisors for National American Heritage Month. Be sure to let your local newspaper know about the proclamation or write your own article and submit it.

The American Indian Scholarship deadline is October 1.  Forms are available on the NSDAR American Indians Committee page. At the National Board of Management meeting in June 2012, twenty students were awarded scholarships worth $1,000 each. One student was awarded the Francis Crawford Marvin Scholarship worth $1,500.  Information about the California Indian Scholarship can be found in the State Handbook (Manual of Procedures). Please read the qualifications carefully. The scholarship amount is $500.00.  Your generous donations to the scholarship funds is greatly appreciated.

At Continental Congress, California received several awards, including 2nd place for most contributions to Bacone College, and a Certificate of Appreciation for an outstanding State report.  Individual Work awards went to 2010-2012 State Chairman Nancy Kilbourn and Vice Chairman Ann Winchell, and Ronnie Elliott-Martin. Congratulations for jobs well done!

The 2012-2013 American Indians Committee theme is “Beating the Drums.” Help us beat them loudly and to positively support our Indian schools, youth programs, and scholarship funds.
